TFSA welcomes the opportunity to participate in the 2008 pre-budget consultations of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. We also appreciate the Committee’s focus on tax policy as this is an important part of public policy that has not received the attention it deserves and we will consequently focus most of our comments on tax matters, both broadly as they affect Canadians in general and more narrowly, with an emphasis on tax matters that are important to the financial sector.

Assessing Toronto’s financial services cluster

Toronto's financial services industries are critical drivers of prosperity in the city, in Ontario, and in Canada. But their success cannot be taken for granted as the industry undergoes ever increasing globalization. Government policy makers and industry participants need to step up their efforts to ensure we are building a world beating financial services cluster in Toronto. That is the key conclusion from a study released today by the Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity on behalf of the Toronto Financial Services Alliance and the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

Talent Matters

In January 2006, the City of Toronto and the TFSA jointly contracted Deloitte consultants to conduct the first comprehensive study into the human resources needs for Toronto's financial services sector
